    Uplink packet scheduling in cellular networks with relaying—comparative study

    Deployment of intermediate relay nodes in cellular networks, e.g. UMTS/ HSPA, has been proposed for service enhancement, which is of particular importance for uplink users at the cell edge suffering from low power capacity and relatively poor channel conditions. In this paper, we propose and investigate a number of uplink packet scheduling schemes deploying the relay functionality in different ways. Using a combined packet and flow level analysis capturing the specifics of the scheduling schemes and the random behavior of the users (initiation and completion of flow transfers), the performance of the various schemes is evaluated and compared to a reference scenario where relaying is not used. The main performance measures considered in our study are realized data rates and mean flow transfer times. Interestingly, considering flow transfer times, it is found that the use of relay nodes is not only particularly beneficial for users at the cell edge but also has a strong, positive effect on the performance of users at other locations not transmitting via a relay node

    Intrinsic viscosities [η] of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) solutions have been measured as a function of temperature between 60 and 25°C. The solvents were toluene and trichloroethene. In both solvents, the [η]-T curve exhibited a point of inflection in the range 45-35°. This phenomenon is explained as a conformational transition, which is possibly involved in the nucleation process of the solution crystallization of PPO. Assuming constancy of the coil expansion factor αη and the solvent draining over the whole temperature interval, a slight increase of characteristic parameter Cα, with decreasing temperature has been calculated

    Sedimentation and flotation coefficients of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) solutions have been measured as a function of temperature between 60 and 25°. The solvents were toluene and trichloroethane (TCE). Solvent permeabilities have been calculated from the sedimentation or flotation coefficients. PPO is less permeable to the solvents used than polystyrene of comparable molecular weight is to toluene and cyclohexane. Strong solvation of toluene and TCE by PPO molecules is proposed as an explanation for this finding. The measured permeabilities were used to check an earlier calculation of the change of radius of gyration with temperature from intrinsic viscosity data. A larger decrease in radius of gyration with increasing temperature has been calculated in this way than with the earlier assumption of essentially impermeable polymer coils, i.e. with the assumption of the value 2.5 × 1023 for the universal viscosity paramete

    A Simultaneous Optical and X-ray Variability Study of the Orion Nebula Cluster. II. A Common Origin in Magnetic Activity

    We present a statistical analysis of simultaneous optical and X-ray light curves, spanning 600 ks, for 814 pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster. The aim of this study is to establish the relationship, if any, between the sites of optical and X-ray variability, and thereby to elucidate the origins of X-ray production in PMS stars. In a previous paper we showed that optical and X-ray variability in PMS stars are very rarely time-correlated. Here, using time-averaged variability indicators to examine the joint occurrences of optical and X-ray variability, we confirm that the two forms of variability are not directly causally related. However, a strong and highly statistically significant correlation is found between optical variability and X-ray luminosity. As this correlation is found to be independent of accretion activity, we argue that X-ray production in PMS stars must instead be intimately connected with the presence and strength of optically variable, magnetically active surface regions (i.e. spots) on these stars. Moreover, because X-ray variability and optical variability are rarely time-correlated, we conclude that the sites of X-ray production are not exclusively co-spatial with these regions. We argue that solar-analog coronae, heated by topologically complex fields, can explain these findings.Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal. 33 pages, 3 figure
